This year we've had an opportunity to be organizing partners of The Flipflopi Expedition on Lake Victoria. The expedition is aimed at raising attention to the increasing plastic pollution problem threatening Lake Vitoria and promote practices that are protecting the Lake from plastic pollution.
This
year's Flipflopi-Expedition in Uganda was kicked off with an early
morning to cleanup at the shores of Lake Victoria. The cleanup brought
together youth climate and environmental activists, fishermen, local
leaders, and the Makindye East Leaders group represented by the elected
member of parliament. It also brought together the Buganda Kingdom
Ministry of Bulungi Bwansi and the British High Commission. Many other
groups also participated in this massive cleanup that lasted over 2
hours. During the clean up we collected 2 trucks full of garbage
composed of plastic bottles, "kaveera'' (polyethene), discarded fishing
gear and bio / food waste from the market.
Visible damage;
Plastic bottles were the most collected items. These were more of soft drinks packaging and local alcohol beverages. In a sample brand audit Cocacola and Pepsi contributed the most discarded brands. Plastic bags were the second most collected items. These range from small grocery packs for daily shopping. Also we collected huge plastic bags used as covers from rain water by fishermen and boat travelers carrying merchandise. We found dead fish (Tilapia “Engege”) dead as a result of ingesting a small plastic bag, the other fish died of chocking from a discarded fishing net made of plastic gauze wire.
